To Customize Word Options, (Desktop version) from the File tab, click Options. Select a category you wish to customize on the left then go through the customizable options on the right. When you’re satisfied, click OK. 


To Customize the Ribbon, (Desktop Version) from the File tab, click options, then choose Customize Ribbon. Select and expand your choice of ribbon tab, then select and expand a group. Once you choose the commands you’d like to implement from the left column, click Add. To remove a command, select a command from the right column and click Remove. 


To Change Word’s Default Font, (Desktop version.) In a new, blank document, open the Font drop-down menu from the Home tab. Click the dialog box launcher (the small arrow at the bottom, right-hand corner in a small square.) When the window opens, select your desired font(/style,) then click Set as Default. A second window will open where you can choose to set all documents to reflect the changes you created, or to have it only apply to the current document. When you are satisfied, click OK. 


To Create a Building Block, (Desktop Version) select the text or objects you wish to use as a building block by highlighting with your mouse. Then from the Insert tab, click Explore Quick Parts then select Save Selection to Quick Parts Gallery. 


To Insert a Building Block, (Desktop Version) click on the document where you want your building block to be placed. Then from the Insert tab, click Explore Quick parts. You can either select a building block from the menu or click Building Blocks Organizer and select a building block from there. When ready, click Insert. 


To Find and Replace using Wildcards, (Desktop version) from the Home tab, click Editing, then the drop-down arrow by Find, then Advanced Find. When the window opens, click More at the bottom left, then check the Use Wildcards checkbox. After you’ve typed the word or phrase you wish to find in the search field, click Special at the bottom of the window and select the wildcard you wish to use.


Wildcard Examples 

( ? ) – Any single character 

( * ) – Any number of characters 

( [ ] ) – One of these characters in a range 

( [!] ) – None of the specified characters 

( < ) – Beginning of a word 

( > ) – End of a word 

( @ ) – One or more instances of a character 

( {n} ) [n=number value] – Exactly (n) instances of a character 

( {n, } ) [n=number value] – at least (n) instances of a character 

( {n, m} ) [n=number value, m=second number value] – Between (n) and (m) instances of a character 

  

To Find and Replace Special Characters (Desktop version) from the Home tab, click Editing, then the drop-down arrow by Find, then Advanced Find. When the window opens, click More at the bottom left. After you have entered a word or phrase in the Search field, click the Special button at the bottom and select a special character. 


To Edit a Document in Multiple Languages, (Desktop version) from the Review tab, click Language and select Set Proofing Language. When you have selected a language, click OK. 


To Insert Additional Editing Languages, (Desktop version) from the Review tab, click Language, then the arrow under Language from the drop-down and select Language Preferences. Then, click Add a Language and select the language you wish to add. When satisfied, click OK. 


To Insert a Date and Time Field, (Desktop Version) from the Insert tab, click Date and Time. Select a date format, then check the Update Automatically check box. When ready, click OK. 


To Insert a Field, (Desktop Version) from the Insert tab, click Explore Quick Parts and select a Field. Next, select a field category, then a field, and when ready, click OK. 


To View Field Codes, (Desktop Version) Right-click a field and select Toggle Field Codes.
